As an international school, the study of language is very important to us! Our German as a Second Language (DaZ) courses run throughout the school year. Students learning German as a foreign or second language are grouped according to their skill levels, aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) at levels A1, A2, B1, B2, and C1.

Our courses are structured in a systematic approach preparing students for the school exit exam (“Reifeprüfung”, usually taken at age 18), from the very first German word at A1 level to an average B2/C1 level at graduation.

Our goal is for students to join their native speaking peers in German class and participate in general German lessons as soon as possible (B1 level onwards).

New Student at GIBS?

New students participate in an informal interview at the beginning of the school year in order to help us find the best course for them.

German Language Tutoring Groups – Morning Classes

New students with little to no knowledge in German (A0 to A2) attend German language tutoring groups in the mornings. We offer separate courses for levels A0, A1, and A2. The aim is to enable students to participate in standard German lessons with native speakers as soon as possible. Regular progress checks provide students and parents with feedback on their learning progress.

German tutoring groups can be attended for a maximum of two years!

In the afternoon we offer courses for the levels A1, A2, B1, B2, and C1 – depending on the needs of our students.

These courses are open to GIBS students, as well as to students from other schools.

How to Register for Afternoon Courses?

1. Complete the following form
   link – English form
   link – deutsches Formular
2. Take the placement test on September 23^rd, 2024, at 4 p.m. (Georgigasse 85, 8020 Graz, tram no. 1, stop: Schloss Eggenberg). We meet in the entrance area (black sofas).
   The placement test takes about 90 minutes (until 17:30).
3. A few days later we will inform your school (office) about your German level and the course times. Ask there! ☺

Certificate

On successful completion of the course (at least 80% attendance), non-GIBS-students receive a certificate of participation and an endorsement on their report card.
