Debate Tournament Ljutomer
Members of GIBS Debate Club have been very busy this Spring. We are proud to have members travelling to various countries flying the flag for GIBS & Austria to showcase our Debate & critical thinking skills. This past weekend a small team of students, Valentina Stock, Emile Bullens, Ferdinand Droschl & Nina Kainz-Kaufmann, travelled to Ljutomer in Slovenia, for the International Debate tournament there. With partipants coming from China, Finland, Hungary, Italy and across the Balkans we had a competitive and high quality tournament.
Out of 30 teams GIBS A finished 8th and qualified for the quarter finals. They debated a variety of very interesting topics including the demonisation of Donal Trump, Teenage love, AI, unschooling, languages, gender & the feminist movement as well as the increased militarisation of the European Union. Fascinating topics – our students won 4 out of 6 debates, which is an excellent return at such a competitive event. A special mention goes to Valentina Stock for ranking 12th out of almost a 100 debaters. Outside of the competitive aspect the students had a great time getting to know the other participants from across Europe and indeed the world, becoming part of the strong debating community. Shout out to the Croatian team, Hvala! Thank you also to Mr Ó Cribin Soldo for organising it and showcasing the importance GIBS places on critical thinking and engagement (with different viewpoints and the wider world).
